Biography

Natasha Lien (b. 1977) is a Chinese British artist working in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Her compositions depict people, landscapes, and cityscapes, working with perspective, colour, tone, rhythm, and form. She draws and paints from life and in many locations, from drawing large-scale interiors in the Victoria and Albert Museum, creating etchings from detailed studies of trees on Hampstead Heath, to painting landscapes in Jordan.

Natasha Lien uses a skilful and academically sound grasp of her medium to paint spaces that resonate, such as her empty landscapes on a refugee island in Greece. Also interesting are her contemporary takes on mythological themes in homage to the great masters, including Transition (after Titian’s Diana and Actaeon). The titles of her work playfully inform the content.

Natasha studied at Central Saint Martins and completed her postgraduate studies at The Royal Drawing School. Her work has been exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Somerset House, Mall Galleries, the Pearson Gallery at the Slade School of Fine Art, Bermondsey Project Space, and Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery. In 2024, she held a solo exhibition at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.

Artist residencies include the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (2024) and Domeniul Styrcea, Valeni Manor, Romania (2024). In 2025, she participated in the Cairo Amman Bank International Painting Symposium (9th edition), hosted by Cairo Amman Bank, Amman, and the Luxor International Painting Symposium (18th edition).

Natasha has been a member of the Arborealists since 2017 and has exhibited with the group in the UK and internationally.

Alongside her studio practice, Natasha is an experienced educator and currently teaches at The Art Academy, Heatherley School of Fine Art, and West Dean College. She also teaches privately and has led landscape painting courses internationally.
